| Opdracht: |
Zebrafish is considered a vertebrate model but is also increasingly applied as fish model for aquaculture purposes. We have established zebrafish to study the exercise effects on growth, immune system and stress. We also use exercise to measure the nutritional impact on physiological performance. A fitness center for zebrafish! All with the objective to look for opportunities of implementation of exercise in aquaculture: A fit fish for a healthy consumer! |

Swimming physiology of yellowtail kingfish |
| Duur: |
3-9 maanden |
| Contactpersoon: |
Arjan Palstra |
| Opdracht: |
Yellowtail kingfish is a marine predator and excellent swimmer with great potential for aquaculture. Swimming tests have shown that growth can be improved by applying exercise protocols. Besides, swimming may reduce the cortisol stress response and may have positive effects on the immune system. We are studying their performance to optimize the swimming protocol, to quantify swimming effects and to study the mechanism in order to manipulate muscle physiology by exercise. |

Sole is still a tough species to reproduce in captivity. Although incidental success indicates that we are on the right track there is still much research to do to gain insights in natural spawning and artificial ways to induce spawning.

|
Opdracht: |
Mussel spat collection systems affect nutrient circulation in the host ecosystem. The project investigates nutrient uptake and regeneration by these systems focussing on consequences for nutrient circulation at the scale of the ecosystem. Experiments are designed at the level of the waste products, the level of the mussel or at the level of an intact assemblage of mussels and associated organisms, involving fieldwork or lab work or a combination. |

|
Opdracht: |
Starfish is an important predator of subtidal mussel beds. Starfish outbreaks and feeding aggregations may play an key role in the stability and survival of newly settled mussel beds. Many factors affect starfish predation rates. Prey density, starfish density and prey quality may play a key role in how fast mussel beds dissapear under starfish predation pressure. Laboratory experiments, field observations and/or field experiments are approaches that can be considered. |

Predation rate of shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) on juvenile musselbeds at different densities |

|
Opdracht: |
The shore crab is an important predator of young musselbeds. Several factors can be thought of that might influence the predation rate of crabs on mussel beds. It will be interesting to see whether predation pressure is influenced by prey density, affected by territorial behaviour and how the productivity of musselbeds is altered by crab predation. The work will include field observations with cameras, a field experiment (enclosure) and a lab experiment (territorial behaviour of crabs and/or predation rate). |

Ecology comparison of European Smelt, Osmerus eperlanus in Waddensea versus Lake Ijssel and Lake Marker |
| Duur: |

| Contactpersoon: |
Adriaan Rijnsdorp en Marieke Keller |
| Opdracht: |
>> Lees meer over: Ecology comparison of European Smelt, Osmerus eperlanus in Waddensea versus Lake Ijssel and Lake Marker |

Reef fish diversity in the Dutch Caribbean |

| Contactpersoon: |
Martin de Graaf, Erik Meesters en Leo Nagelkerke |
| Opdracht: |
The aim of the project is to develop a robust method for long-term fish community surveys in the Dutch Caribbean. As many of the reefs in the Dutch Caribbean, e.g. the Saba Bank, extend below safe limits for diving surveys, baited remote underwater stereo-video (stereo BRUV) will be used to study fish diversity, relative abundance and population structure. Where possibly diver operated stereo-video transects (stereo DOV) will be compared with stereo-BRUV. >> Lees meer: Reef fish diversity in the Dutch Caribbean |

Jan Jaap Poos |
| Opdracht: |
In this project, historic data of the surveys and commercial landings for the flatfish species Turbot and Brill will be analysed to quantify the historic changes in their populations with respect to the age-, size and maturity. The results will allow a first time comparison with other flatfish species, gaining a helicopter view of the changes that have taken place in the North sea over the past few decades. >> Lees meer: The population dynamics and life history characteristics of turbot and brill in the North Sea |
