Zeevogels transporteren plastic over de hele wereld

IMARES onderzoeker Jan Andries van Franeker presenteerde resultaten van het onderzoek aan zwerfvuil op de 5th International Marine Debris Conference, Honolulu, Hawaii (20-25 maart 2011).
Jaarlijks vervoeren zeevogels honderden tonnen plastic, soms naar de andere kant van de wereld. De vogels verwarren plastic met voedsel, hopen het op in hun maag, en kunnen de resten aldus van wintergebieden verplaatsen naar hun broedkolonies elders.

Each year, seabirds transport hundreds of tons of plastic, sometimes all around the globe. Seabirds mistake plastic fro food, accumulate in in their stomach, and may transport the remains from distant wintering areas to their breeding colonies.
