White fish equally climate friendly as farmed fish

The carbon footprint of several types of fish and meat have been compared with each other in a study by LEI, part of Wageningen UR.
The environmental impact of cod and plaid caught in the North Sea (the sea bordering the Netherlands) is the same as that of imported cultivated fish like salmon, tilapia and pangasius. But because fishing vessels are becoming more energy efficient, the carbon footprint of wild-caught fish is coming down.

Aquaculture helps solve the problem of world food demand

Africa’s population is growing and needs to be fed. But the yield of fish from seas, rivers and lakes is falling.
Skills and knowledge can be exported from the Netherlands to build a productive aquaculture sector in Africa. There are opportunities for Dutch businesses here, and it can help solve the problem of food demand. This was the conclusion reached by LEI and IMARES after a visit to Kenya.
