Antarctic krill in a changing ocean
Scientific workshop on effects of environmental change on Antarcic krill and implications for ecosystem-based management
Texel, The Netherlands, 11 - 15 April 2011

The Netherlands and the European Commission  funded a workshop aiming to compile the state of knowledge about the impact of environmental change and increasing human exploitation on Antarctic krill in the light of an updated analysis of existing knowledge, and to discuss potential implications for CCAMLR's ecosystembased management approach.

In addition, the workshop took place in a very pleasant and productive atmosphere. The scientists identified major threats to Antarctic krill and ecosystems caused by climate change. There was large consensus that there are still vast knowledge gaps concerning the biology and ecology of Antarctic krill. The group proposed six fields of research that urgently need to be deepened in order to better predict and quantify past and future changes.
The results of the workshop will be published in a scientific journal, and reported to the European Commission and CCAMLR. The publication is expected towards the end of summer.
