Antarctic krill in a changing ocean
Scientific workshop on effects of environmental change on Antarcic krill and implications for ecosystem-based management
Texel, The Netherlands, 11 - 15 April 2011
IMARES, part of Wageningen UR, has invited about 30 international krill scientists to come together on Texel for the workshop Antarctic Krill in a Changing Ocean.
This workshop was funded by the European Commission and the Dutch government. It was motivated by recent concerns that populations of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) could experience serious difficulties caused by climate warming. The ecosystem-friendly management approach of the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) may have to account for these threats.
The workshop provides a forum to exchange the newest scientific insights over the status of Antarctic krill in a changing climate. Because krill plays a key role in the Antarctic ecosystem, potential ecosystem effects will also be evaluated. Furthermore, the scientists will discuss potential modifications to the management approach of CCAMLR taking account of these changes.
The results of the workshop will be presented to the European Commission in a public report in autumn.
