A workshop of the Fulmar study group was held 11-16 Feb 2009 at IMARES on the island of Texel in the Netherlands.
The quantity of plastics in stomachs of beached Northern Fulmars is used to monitor trends in the level of debris polluting the North Sea. Governments use this as one of their ‘Ecological Quality Objectives (EcoQO’s) in which targets are defined for an ecologically healthy North Sea and by which progress towards achieving such targets can be measured. |

Data for the Fulmar-Plastic-EcoQO are collected by many different groups. Once a year they meet at an international workshop. Here, beached Fulmars are dissected to collect the stomach contents, and the group discusses the data handling and future coordination.
The Fulmar project is supported by NYK Logistics Europe Ltd and the Netherlands Ministry of Transport (VenW).
