Industry: Commodity board
The Dutch fishing industry is well-organized. Fishermen, fish and shellfish farmers, fish processors, whole-salers and retailers, they all have their own interest organization. But in addition to that, they are united too, into the Dutch Fish Product Board.
At the Dutch Fish Product Board all of the different organizations meet. In this way, the various branches of this industry can closely keep in contact with one another. Together, they seek to bring about a fishing branch that assumes its responsibilities and produces high-quality products, that is economically sound and faces the competition on the international market. The management of the Fish Product Board consists of people who actually work in this industry. This means that the board is not only meant for the entire fishery industry, but is actually a part of it.
The board operates in the area where industry and policy meet. Wishes and ideas from the industry are communicated to civil servants and politicians, to the press and to the public at large. And vice versa. The board does not merely influence Dutch and European policy, they are the actual policy makers and monitor the compliance with agreements made.
