Shellfish culture on-land needs an environment with enough oxygen and sufficient supply of food. This can be reached by using flow-through systems with ambient seawater. The seaborne location of IMARES ensures the availability of raw seawater. Two 6000 liter tanks with continuous seawater supply can be used to study shellfish in their natural environment. In addition, an experimental set-up to measure clearance rates of bivalves is available.
