Objectives

This website has the objective of providing easy access to expertise for starting and experienced fish and shellfish growers, sector organisations, civil servants and interested citizens. Aspects of production, marketing, policy and regulations and education and research for the aquaculture sector are explained in full detail. All information regarding the production of aquaculture products can be found via this virtual expertise desk. This website focuses on the production of consumptive products, and therefore does not have any information about non-consumptive products such as ornamental fish.

Summary

Aquaculture comprises the cultivation of plants and animals, which therefore includes activities as diverse as catfish farming and the cultivation of seaweed. The most important aquaculture sectors in the Netherlands are shellfish culture and fish farming. Shellfish culture is concentrated along the coast, while fish farming can take place inland using recirculation systems. The possibilities for saline agriculture in the Netherlands are also being investigated.
