Zealand Sole

The 'Zealand sole’ project provides the fishing industry with a good supplement to catching fish in open waters, as well as offering new opportunities to farmers. It is hoped that the project will give rise to a new, economically-viable sector in Zealand, thereby going some way to compensate for the negative consequences that are being felt after the cessation of the mechanical cockle fishing industry in the Wadden Sea.
TongThe 'Zealand sole' production model combines cultivating young fish indoors with letting them develop outside in seawater basins. The natural life cycle makes this project sustainable: fish produce waste matter, the waste matter allows algae and saline crops such as glasswort and sea lavender to grow, algae form food for shellfish and clam worms. Some of the clam worms are used to feed the sole, while others are processed into fish food. The result is a mixed saline sector.
