IMARES specialises in fish research: salt water, fresh water and diadromous*.
Every year, research vessels map out the fish stocks in the North Sea in cooperation with institutes from other countries, as part of the international ICES. This concerns commercial species such as herring, plaice, sole and cod. Surveys are also conducted in the coastal zone to determine the number of juvenile plaice.
In the rivers, transmitters are used to track salmon and other fish species as they migrate from freshwater to salt water or in the other direction. IMARES also participates in a protection programme for eel.
