Marine mammals

IMARES has studied common seals and grey seals in the Wadden Sea for many years. Seal populations are counted about 10 times per year from aircraft to determine how many adults animals there are and how many juveniles have been added to the population that year.

In addition, IMARES studies spatial use to determine where seals forage and the exchanges between populations from the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Great Britain. We also investigate the diet of the seals and the effects of disturbances caused by humans. Satellite transmitters show that seals not only use the Wadden Sea and the coastal zone as a habitat, but also the entire North Sea. This is important information for policy. Since 2007, research into harbour porpoises has also been given more attention because these dolphin-like creatures are becoming more abundant.
