Micro-or mesocosms are experimental ecosystems that can be used to perform tests under realistic semi-field conditions. Mesocosms can be used for a wide range of ecological and ecotoxicological research. The design of a study and the characteristics of the mesocosm type used depend on the purpose of the study. We apply various types of mesocosms, that can be employed with fresh or marine water:

Indoor plankton ecoassays:
A constructed or natural plankton assemblage is maintained in ca. 80 L test vessels under controlled conditions.
Maximum test duration: 2 weeks.
Outdoor plankton enclosures:
Large plastic bags (1000 to 3000 L) are mounted on a floating frame and enclose a natural plankton community that experiences natural environmental conditions. Maximum test duration: 3-4 weeks

Indoor ponds:
In indoor ponds (500-1000 L), containing water and sediment, a community of plankton, macrophytes and macro invertebrates is created and maintained under controlled conditions.
Maximum test duration ca. 3 months. (marine indoor ponds are under development at the moment).

Outdoor ponds:
The outdoor ponds have a volume of 2500 or 5000 L and contain sediment and water with a community plankton, macrophytes and macro invertebrates and if appropriate small fish. (marine indoor ponds are under development at the moment)
