Maritime Technology Network (MTN)
In 2010, the Maritime Knowledge Centre (MKC) initiated the ‘Clean Seas’ thematic network. The aim of this network is to promote knowledge exchange between industry and universities/research institutes and to coordinate and combine initiatives. In this way, the various parties can work in line with European Maritime Policy to reduce the environmental impact of ocean shipping.

To implement the activities of the network, a framework of cooperation has been established with the Dutch Platform Ship Emissions (Platform Scheepsemissies). In 2010/2011 five meetings were held. Thematic network
With its Maritime Policy, the European Union has committed itself to a growing and economically strong maritime sector. To realise this growth, the sector must develop in a sustainable fashion. A broad approach that takes account of all types of maritime emissions has been established as a precondition for this sustainable development. As a result, new topics such as underwater noise and the introduction of exotic species due to hull fouling have been placed on the agendas of the Member States.
The aim of the thematic network is to provide direction to maritime technological development by sharing and providing access to specialised knowledge and information that is currently available at maritime companies and government agencies. The ultimate aim is to promote the sustainability of ocean shipping by initiating joint development activities.
To realise these aims, five meetings were held, for government agencies, universities and research institutes, shipping companies, shipyards and suppliers.
Meetings
During the meetings, presentations were held about technologies and developments, and discussions were held to analyse the needs of the sector and determine where additional research is needed.
- Indices for environmental performance: usefulness, necessity and further development
- Ship efficiency and atmospheric emissions: which legislation is going into force and what is being planned?
- Underwater noise: emissions, effects, measures and future policy
- Waterborne emissions: Emerging technologies to reduce waterborne emissions: what are urgent emissions and what technological solutions are available?
- Zero impact in susceptible coastal areas: what technologies required for an emission-free ship?
