IMARES has extensive experience in carrying out environmental research and development and environmental consultancy services in the field of biocides for national and international authorities and the industrial biocide sector. The biocidal groups of special interest comprise
- disinfection chemicals for fish culture systems
- desinfection chemicals for drinkwater
- wood preservatives
- conservation for liquid cooling and processing systems
- corrosion inhibitors.
- slimicides
- piscicides
- insecticides and acaricides
- antifouling substances
- disinfection chemicals for ballast water
The analytical laboratory has well-known expertise in analysis of biocide substances. The matrices analysed are food, biota (including fish), sediments, soil and water. IMARES has ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. IMARES has several experimental systems at disposal ranging from small scale laboratory setups to large scale marine and freshwater enclosure systems. With these systems the fate, effects and risks of biocides for either single species, or ecosystems can be measured under GLP. The Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) claim was assigned to IMARES in 2003 for its model ecosystem research, being the first laboratory achieving this status in model ecosystem research in the Netherlands. Besides the multi species studies, and the monitoring of effect responses, Toxicity Identification and Evaluation studies are performed to detect the specific cause of effects of chemicals, including biocides, on communities. The type of biocide studies carried out by IMARES range from environmental evaluations for registration purposes to advise for water boards and authorities in designing monitoring programmes for biocides in marine and freshwater systems. Typical products are research reports, registration dossier evaluation reports, bioassay and mesocosm design development. |
