Objectives

Observe long term data for micro contaminants in eel (trends)
Testing of the concentrations against the norm values for consumption (food-safety)

Summary

In 1992 LNV started in order of the Directie Groene Ruimte en Recreatie a yearly monitoring program to measure micro contaminants in eel. Samples of eel are collected from different locations of the Dutch fresh water bodies. Eel accumulates compounds from the water, the sediment and through intake. Lipophylic micro contaminants, like PCB’s and pesticides, are bound into the fat of the organism, while heavy metals are concentrated in the liver. Measurements of the bioaccumulation in eel provide in information about the risk for human consumption, but also about the quality of the water. Results of this project are important for policy and management.

Results

The status of this moment: This project is still in progress, preliminary results:
Eel from the Rivers Rhine, Meuse, Waal, Lek and the area of the Biesbosch exceeded the EU consumption norm of 12 pg/g product.
